Case Study - Pewsey Wharf

Project: Pewsey Wharf

Project Location: Pewsey Wiltshire

River System: Kennet and Avon Canal
Client:

Date of Installation:
January 2009

Project Brief

To protect a 155m section of heavily eroded towpath and oversee the resurfacing of 250m of towpath.

The towpath had been seriously eroded by wave action from passing watercraft and from mooring pins driven into the bank.

In some areas the erosion was threatening the safety of the footpath.

Solution

The towpath was resurfaced and the bank repaired and protected from further erosion.

A marginal mattress 'grow bag' was installed in front of the eroded towpath and the area behind backfilled with site-won material from the towpath resurfacing.

Under the water, brushwood habitat enhancements were installed to provide valuable invertebrate habitat and to act as a cyprinid fish spawning substrate.  Brushwood also provides refuge for fish fry.

The structure was planted with marginal flora of local provenance to lock to the bank together and provide an additional bio-diversity boost.

Finally, a coir wave-break was installed to protect the new bank margin from boating wake and give the bank the best possible chance to establish naturally
