Project Brief

To:

  • Provide sustainable soft engineered bank protection and arrest the severe undercutting of an original dry concrete bank.
  • The design must take into consideration longevity, bio-diversity and must be designed in such a way that it is in keeping with HMC prestigious history and surroundings.

Solution

Cain Bio-Engineering Ltd designed and installed a robust marginal vegetated mattress along the entire river bank at HMC.

Constructed of hardwood posts with a woven hazel face, the marginal mattress is designed to withstand and dissipate the wave action caused by boat traffic.

This cost effective, soft engineered approach uses the marginal wetland vegetation as a way of dissipating boat bow wave energy, whilst at the same time providing habitats for aquatic animals and taking into consideration the aesthetics of the features in its prestigious surroundings
