June '04 Pre works - Accelerated erosion on the outside meander flood bank.

Sept '05 Post works - The brushwood mattress is skilfully contoured to re-align the outside meander.

Project Brief

Reinstate the failing tidal defence levee on a wide outside meander. Sediment accretions on the opposing point bar were acumulating as fast as the flood bank retreated, thereby threatening significant areas of farming land and infrastructure in the tidal flood plain.

Solution

Cain Bio-Engineering designed and installed a contoured   brushwood mattress, anchored with hardwood stakes. Sediment deposited during each tidal cycle rapidly filled the mattress interstices with re-constituted clay colloid. The anaerobic conditions indefinately suspend decomposition of the internal woody skeleton, thus assuring the long-term integrity of the structure.

Structural life expectancy is well in excess of 100 years irrespective of rising sea levels..

" By careful observation of the geomorphologic tidal features, Cain Bio-engineering consultants were able to design a sustainable solution entirely in keeping with natural processeses and at a significant cost saving to the public purse"
